CWith few photos and relatively few changes, Toyota officially unveiled the long-awaited update of the Thai Yaris – or Vios, as it is called in some markets. As planned, on Saturday the Japanese firm confirmed the news that we had been anticipating after digitized images of its design and even spy photos were leaked.
To tell the truth, there are no major surprises since we already knew where the modifications were to be concentrated. Still, these details are enough to renew its image and bring it a little closer to that of the European Yaris or the new Corolla. First of all, the most striking feature are the new Led headlamps, which, while maintaining their format, incorporate this lighting technology in the top-of-the-range versions. The bumper was also completely rethought, now with a huge trapezoidal-shaped central air intake, accompanied by new C-shaped headlight frames. No changes to the sides – except for the newly designed alloy wheels. – nor on the back, which remain intact. To differentiate the different equipment options, the most complete will feature a chrome grille detail.
Behind the scenes, the only change was the incorporation of a new screen for the multimedia system, compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as requested by users and which has been available for a few months ago in Argentina. It also includes connectivity via Bluetooth and reverse camera, although it lacks physical buttons to operate it more intuitively.
As for safety, it would keep its complete equipment intact, with up to 7 airbags, traction control, stability control, brakes with ABS / EBD / BA, inertial seat belts and headrests in the five seats and Isofix anchorages.
Mechanically, it will continue to be marketed with two gasoline engines, the 1NR-FE 1.3-liter and 98 HP (exclusive for Brazil) along with the well-known 107 HP 2NR-FE 1.5 VVTi engine, associated with a 6-speed manual transmission or automatic transmission CVT with 7 simulated gears.
After its debut in Asia, according to Brazilian media, for its arrival in our region we will have to wait a little longer: the restyling will only begin to be produced at the Sorocaba plant towards the first half of next year, at which time It will also land in our country.
On the other hand, although it was not yet announced by the brand, it is known that Toyota has already registered the design of the European Yaris in our country, which could anticipate its possible future commercialization to complement the current one and thus be able to fight in the high band of the segment B or to be able to offer a hybrid variant.
