It’s official! The second Avatar becomes the most successful film in Czech cinemas

Tomáš Vyskočil alias Thomas z Kinomaniak website is an expert on home movie sales. And he’ll write about them for you every week on MovieZone.

Roll out the kegs for the whole gang, it’s time to celebrate. Avatar: The Way of Water today officially becomes the most successful film in Czech cinemas, measured by sales. The current ruler, Bohemian Rhapsody, fell sometime in the middle of last week, after the weekend it is already confirmed. 273 million crowns for the second Avatar is certainly not final, it continues to be at the top without any problems, and it has competition from all sides. The threshold of 300 million CZK is not at all excluded, however, another milestone is much more important for the duo now, and that is to surpass the first Avatar. Last time, we wrote that it lacked only 60,000 viewers, which Avatar almost gave for the entire week, but that comparison was not quite correct.

In addition to Avatar’s 1.35 million from previous releases, it is also necessary to add last year’s renewed premiere, which attracted another 75 thousand viewers. The difference between number one and number two is currently about 100,000 viewers, which seems like nothing in the overall scale, but for most films it’s a big jump. For the second Avatar, it should be a 2-3 week job at the current rate. Or to put it another way – the crossing of this border will be celebrated earlier than 300 million, which is about 27 million CZK or some 140 thousand viewers away.

HIGHEST GROSSING FILMS FROM CZECH CINEMAS

Of course, that’s assuming Avatar isn’t marred by other Hollywood blockbusters, which with the Ant-Man trilogy coming next weekend looks to be the biggest danger. Currently, however, James Cameron’s biggest foreign rival was another film directed by … James Cameron. Renewed premiere Titanic after 25 years, it attracted about 10,000 viewers to Czech cinemas on the Valentine’s weekend, who remembered what it was like when James started with the first attendance records. Interestingly, Titanic has an attendance of approximately 1.1 million viewers in our country and “only” 89 million crowns. It is therefore just behind the top ten in the historical table of the most visited films. According to the audience, the second Avatar is the seventh so far, the sixth is Coil and the fifth the first Avatar. To close the circle, we will add that Bohemian Rhapsody attracted 1.8 million viewers. This just illustrates how much average ticket prices have changed in five years – by more than a quarter.

THE MOST WATCHED FILMS IN CZECH HISTORY

It seems impossible, but there are movies in theaters other than James Cameron’s, so let’s check them out. It would be unfair especially to the winner of the last weekend, which is again a Czech romantic comedy Island. In 10 days and 11 nights, Jiří Langmajer and Jana Plodková already attracted more than 126,000 viewers in cinemas and will probably rule the entire month of February without any problems until the colder weather subsides and new Czech comedies arrive. The island practically wiped out the competition Birthday cardswhich reached similar numbers only after four weeks.

Children’s films are still doing well. Similarly persistent as the second Avatar is also the second Puss in Boots, which is already catching up to his weekend averages. He collected more than 323 thousand viewers and becomes next Outsiders the post-pandemic savior of children’s shows. He is decently seconded by the new feature in the second week Asterix a Obelix. For him, the current goal is to reach somewhere in the area where Mission Cleopatra or Her Majesty was in charge years ago, so some 120 to 140 thousand viewers. He is about a third (53 thousand) and still has a chance. All children’s films fell by about a third after the last extended children’s weekend, but smaller titles such as Mummy, tooth Fairy whether Amazing Mauricewhich need a greater pace than 5 thousand viewers per weekend.

All the real news of the week turned out infamously, the already mentioned Titanic was by far the most successful of them. He’s off to a bad start threesome No pants, but even the first two parts were not major hits in our country. Norwegian horror Escape it certainly won’t reach the numbers of its more famous Hollywood namesake either. And only for marginal viewers, at the end of the TOP 20 are a pair of more demanding films – historical dramas Corset and a preview of a potential Oscar winner Whale.

Brendan Fraser’s big comeback won’t open in our cinemas until February 23rd, he will be directing other films this coming weekend. Norwegian comedy I am sick of you will try to at least peek into the TOP 20, while nothing else is expected from the next new release but first place. Yes, the first Hollywood blockbuster of the year is here and you can guess how successful the third one will be Ant-Man subtitled Quantumania will be with us. The first two didn’t make a complete dent in the world, and with their numbers of 108 and 182 thousand viewers, they are among the worst pieces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
