It’s official, avatars are coming to WhatsApp

Avatars have taken over Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram for some time. In a style reminiscent of a cartoon, we can see the avatars of the users of these platforms browsing the Facebook comments sections, the Messenger discussions, the profile photos on Instagram or even the stories.

WhatsApp has been deprived of it until now, but things will soon change thanks to the arrival of an update. At the moment, this update is exclusively for people using Android and only a few users have been able to benefit from it. No official date has been announced for an update that affects all users, but it should arrive shortly.

This news may seem anecdotal, but it is not. The common point between Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp is that all these platforms belong to the Meta company. The development of avatars via WhatsApp takes place in a logic of expansion of Marc Zuckerberg’s metaverse.

In a recent article published on the Meta website, mention is made of the group’s desire to interconnect social networks and virtual reality through avatars. A person’s avatar can thus maintain the same appearance, whether on Instagram, WhatsApp or in Horizon Worlds, Meta’s virtual reality social network. Despite the cold reception given by the public to his metaverse, Meta wants to show that he deeply believes in the future of Horizon Worlds and in the development of virtual reality.

The Wabetainfo site has published a first preview of the avatars.

The Web site Wabetainfo got my hands on the first pictures of the avatars in question. According to user feedback, the feature is hidden in the Application Settings. An Avatar section would allow you to customize your virtual clone. Once created, the avatar shows up in a whole series of poses that can be shared as stickers in conversations.
