It’s not worth waiting for the new Nokia mobile phone

We have unfortunate news for those waiting for a new Nokia flagship. Brand manager HMD Global has also officially stated its views on standing in the high-end segment and it turns out it is not worth expecting a top mobile from them in the foreseeable future.

The last premium smartphone launched on the market by Nokia, controlled by HMD Global, came out in 2019, it was the shock camera Nokia 9 PureView. The mobile arrived late and didn’t even get the promised software support at the end of last year, so the Android 11 system didn’t get on the device and won’t. The manufacturer has launched a discounted exchange program for those who wanted to upgrade as compensation.

Although there have been all sorts of rumors about a possible successor, there has been no sequel yet, and now it is almost certain it won’t.

Adam Ferguson, Director of Product Marketing at HMD Global, was interviewed by Android Authority team and told the newspaper that it doesn’t make much sense for the company to make premium devices over $ 800 yet. He also added that it is of no use to their company to start a specification war with other competing companies, they would rather represent something different. It is believed that it is best to focus on the production of “feature phones” – what they call the common-language dumb phone – and entry-level and mid-range smartphones, devices that have a long lifespan as well as several days of operation.

Nokia was still the 8th largest mobile manufacturer globally in 2018, but sales have not started to decline much, currently ranking 11th on the international stage. In another interview, Ferguson mentioned that they wanted to put the basics in order first, so their recently unveiled Nokia C21 Plus and C2 put reliability at the forefront of the low price. Instead of drop-down features, they want to put people in the hands of people that will stand their ground in the long run and not aim to compete with increasingly harsh hardware. If you want stronger iron, high-end cameras, there are countless alternatives, but that’s not Nokia’s way, Ferguson says.

As it turned out, the new concept came in for the company, as it had achieved revenue growth since it used this tactic, at least according to Ferguson, that was behind the growth.

“These new phones are less conspicuous and less exciting than the ones others come up with, yet it will be one of our growth areas. People are switching from traditional cell phones to smartphones and want something really reliable. They’re used to really durable and robust devices that last for days, and we make sure our devices meet those needs in the smartphone category. ”

The truth is that this is not the first time HMD Global has categorically stated that they are not competing in high-end smartphones. Already at the end of last year, there were statements on their part that premium mobiles were in the unreachable category for them and that they would rather focus on smartphones for € 100-200 in the future.
