It’s not Photoshop. The ship “levitates”. They wondered how – o2

This amazing phenomenon has been captured on Saturday along the coast at Falmouth, Cornwall. David Morris, walking on the shore, could not believe what he was seeing. The cargo ship “levitated” over the water. To make sure everything was alright, he took a picture of the phenomenon.

A similar sight was spotted in Banff, Aberdeenshire earlier this week by Colin McCallum. This one, however, saw a double ship. He had no doubts about what he was dealing with. This is a mirage-like phenomenon – superior mirage.

Usually the air temperature drops as altitude increases. In the case of the superior mirage phenomenon, warm air is above the cold air band and plays with the perception of the human eye. Hence the phenomenon of optical illusion, which makes us notice objects in a perverse way. The mirage is common in the Arctic Circle and can be seen in winter in the UKhowever, it is still a very rare sight.
