It’s not just BMW – see how the grilles have grown in 30 years

This element now plays a major role in modern car design

In recent years, one of the most talked about elements of the car’s design has been BMW’s ever-larger radiator grille. At the same time, it cannot be denied that this particular detail (not only for the Bavarian manufacturer) is one of the most important, as it makes different brands easier to recognize.

However, the grills are getting bigger and bigger – not only at BMW, but also at other manufacturers. And if you think those from 10 years ago look small when placed next to their modern equivalents, you’ve probably forgotten what cars from the 90s looked like. Of course, even then there were manufacturers like Mercedes and Rolls-Royce who called the eyes to the front of their cars with a large plate of chrome, but most hatchbacks and sedans had small grilles, and some had none at all.

Venting all the necessary cooling air through a hole in the bumper rather than a traditional grille opening may have been common in sports cars and supercars, but was uncommon in more practical vehicles. Unfortunately, as this look became the norm, the cars began to lose their identity and automakers began reintroducing more and more stylized grilles in an attempt to inject new style into the design.

The fact is that in 30 years the radiator grill has grown significantly. And this selection of models proves it. However, it is debatable which of the two options is more beautiful.
