It’s not just about minerals, this is the goal of China-Russia partnering with the Taliban

Jakarta

When the Taliban group controlled Afghanistan, which was left by the United States, China and Russia actually carried out intensive communication with the Taliban. Apart from economic motives, apparently the two countries have other reasons and goals related to their respective domestic security policies.

China needs economic concessions with the Taliban or not, because before the Taliban won a few years ago China was already there. The real motive is that China has domestic problems with the Uighur group who always wants to be independent. China hopes that the Taliban will not support the Uighurs,” said Hamid Awaludin. in the Outspoken program at detik.com, Monday (30/8/2021).

Russia did the same. The country that once controlled Afghanistan also has interests with the Taliban in the Dagestan Muslim group in Russia’s northern mountains.

“Well, so both of them think that making friends with the Taliban can help put the brakes on or dampen this at least not having an alliance with them (the Muslims),” explained Hamid.

The Taliban has an interest in establishing close relations with the two veto-wielding members of the UN Security Council to show the United States and Western Europe that they are not misbehaving. In addition to ‘backing’, the Taliban hopes that China and Russia can help build the economy while running the Afghan government.

So far, Afghanistan’s economy and government have relied on donations from many countries, such as Japan and America. Japan is known to subsidize the salaries of Afghan employees. Likewise, the presence of tens of thousands of American troops helped revive the wheels of the Afghan economy by supplying food and other necessities.

“The presence of America itself will drive the economy because there are tens of thousands of troops. For all the food supplies, there are practical calculations,” said Hamid.

Even though Afghanistan is categorized as a poor country, American military officials and geologists reveal that Afghanistan has mineral deposits worth nearly US$ 1 trillion or equivalent to Rp. 14,400 trillion (exchange rate of Rp. 14,400 per dollar).

Mineral content consists of iron, copper, to gold scattered throughout Afghanistan. There is even the largest lithium content in the world. Lithium is an important component that can be used for rechargeable batteries and other technologies to tackle the climate crisis.
