Errol Spence Jr. believes Terence Crawford can beat Canelo Alvarez. The former welterweight champion shared his views in a recent conversation with Fight Hub TV.
Crawford just moved up to super welterweight and won a world title. After his win against Israil Madrimov, he is now champion in four weight classes. At 37, the fighter from Omaha, Nebraska wants to fight Canelo before retiring.
Canelo holds titles in four weight classes and fights at super middleweight. That’s 14 pounds heavier than Crawford’s current weight class. But Spence believes Crawford can make the jump.
“It could happen, why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then he should go for it, so I’m okay with that.”
Spence said opposite Fight Hub TVthat he would be rooting for Crawford if the fight happens.
“I’ll be for ‘Bud’ if he fights Canelo, I’ll be for him. I don’t know if he’ll win or lose, but I’ll definitely be for Crawford. I think if anyone can do it , he can do it too.
Spence pointed out that Canelo has changed weight before. The Mexican star fought Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol at 175 pounds.
“He’s chasing size, so why not? Canelo moved up to 175 pounds and fought Kovalev and the other guy too [Bivol]so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he can do it, why can’t Crawford do it too.”
At the moment, neither Canelo nor Crawford have fights scheduled. Canelo initially seemed uninterested in the fight. But he might warm to the idea. He has defeated most of the top fighters in the super middleweight division and doesn’t seem keen on facing David Benavidez.
As for Spence, he last fought against Crawford and lost. He could move up to super welterweight himself, with a fight against Sebastian Fundora being discussed.
Crawford’s recent win over Madrimov made him a quadrupleweight world champion. The victory puts him in a strong position to pursue even bigger fights.
