Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Depok Metro Police Chief, Kombes Imran Edwin Siregar said the loud bang that was heard from the Margo City mall came from a falling freight elevator.
Imran said the freight elevator descended from the third floor to the first floor of the mall.
“Because of the freight elevator from the third to the first floor,” Imran said when contacted by reporters, Saturday (21/8).
The reason the freight elevator could fall, said Imran, was because the load of the goods being transported was too heavy. Plus, the building construction is not strong.
Suddenly, said Imran, the elevator plunged until it made a loud sound like a bomb. Ceilings from the third floor and one collapsed too.
“The building construction is not strong enough to withstand the load of the freight elevator in the rear position, so that the freight elevator falls to the first floor, causing a fairly large sound,” he explained.
“So I declare there was no bomb explosion,” he added.
It is known that the incident where a bang was heard in Margo City Depok occurred at around 16.30 WIB this afternoon. Initially the sound of the boom was said to be due to a collapsed ceiling.
So far, 11 people have been injured. Some of them are security guards and visitors.
Three injured people were examined at the University of Indonesia (UI) and eight others were rushed to the Bunda Hospital in Depok.
CNNIndonesia.com has contacted the management of Margo City, but there has been no response either by telephone or short message.
