Belgorod is located just across the border from the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. The area has been the target of several attacks and drone attacks by Ukrainian forces during the two and a half year conflict.

The Russian Telegram Mash channel, which claims to be linked to law enforcement, said on Tuesday that Ukrainian troops were trying to break through the border near the Russian town of Nekhoteyevka.

“Information has emerged that the enemy is trying to break through the borders of the Belgorod region,” Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram, reported by the news agency. AFPTuesday (27/8/2024).

“According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the border situation remains difficult but under control,” he said.

He later sent a message saying that Ukraine had carried out raids and drone strikes on at least three towns in the area, without commenting further on the reported attacks.

Russia’s border areas have been on high alert since Ukraine launched a surprise attack on the Kursk region three weeks ago. In the attack, the Ukrainian military captured dozens of towns in Russia’s biggest cross-border attack since World War II.

Russia he said earlier this month that he would send more troops to protect the Belgorod region. Authorities in the area had declared a state of emergency due to military attacks Ukraine.
