MusicThe Dutch Goldband is writing festival history this summer: performances at Rock Werchter, Tomorrowland and Pukkelpop – the Belgian ‘Big Three’ if you will -, no Dutch band has done that before. They can also delete Tomorrowland from their list since Friday. “Very special”, says Milo (29), Karel (28) and Boaz (32), in a hilarious and chaotic conversation about playing with a heel bone fracture, participating in the Eurovision Song Contest and Philippe Geubels. “We really want to participate with your Smartest Human.”

They came, they saw and they played Tomorrowland flat with their light songs full of hard beats. The three Hagenese of Goldband, with a striking preference for neck carpets, were allowed to subject The Library to their will today, something that the assembled public willingly went along with. With this they have already been able to delete two Belgian milestones from their list, after Rock Werchter earlier. And there is another one on the list, because Goldband will also be playing Pukkelpop this summer. In doing so, they are writing festival history: never before has a Dutch band done this for them, in the same year. And they are very happy about that. “It was a bit overwhelming today, overwhelming,” they admit after their show. “We sincerely think it’s very special and we are also very grateful,” Milo adds at the time. “We don’t know how to behave half the time, which is why we are so nice to everyone here now.” “I also thought it was very funny that you said on the bus here: how am I supposed to show that I’m grateful”, adds Boaz. “That’s actually very difficult to show.”

Interviewing the three Duracell rabbits can be a challenge at times. Their thoughts fly in all directions, chaos reigns supreme, jokes fly around. “Maybe we’re a little irritating now? Do you find us annoying?” they want to know. “We may be a little out of reach. Take it easy, boys.” Although we gladly forgive them: the three have just finished their much-appreciated show on The Library and are eager to dive into the party crowd. Except for Boaz, because he jumped off stage during their performance at Rock Werchter and fell unluckily. The result: a heel bone fracture, and ten weeks in a cast. At Tomorrowland he was therefore forced to finish the concert seated. “How hard is that? A five. At 27”, it sounds. So there will be no parties today. “We’re going to leave Boaz here in the backstage,” Milo laughs. “Like: too bad you screwed up your summer with your jump, but Karel and I are going to have fun. ‘Having the max’, as they say with you. And then we go to a cafe.” But first to the Youphoria stage. “I like hardstyle”, says Karel. “But not from Da Tweekaz, who have to play there. That’s very commercial and we don’t like that. We like really pure music, we are purists.”

Away from the music: Milo recently took part in the Dutch version of ‘De Slimste Mens’. “I’ve flown out in the meantime,” he admits. “I knew all the smart questions, I didn’t know the stupid questions. Sesame Street, Bolle Gijs, werewolf … I don’t know all the things you don’t really need to know to survive.” Does he feel like taking a shot at the title of Smartest Human in our country? “I really want that,” he says enthusiastically. “The Flemish version is much nicer, I heard. With more humor. And Philippe Geubels!” During his participation, Milo also mentioned that Goldband is open to participating in the Eurovision Song Contest. When we ask them today how serious those plans are, each of them says something different. “It’s our big dream” (Milo). “I don’t do it because my brother doesn’t like it” (Karel). “We now have Jan Smit on the phone!” (Boaz). “No, we hereby invite you to come to Curaçao on October 20. We do a bed-in there, like John Lennon and Yoko Ono. And there you can ask all the questions you want about the Eurovision Song Contest.” Is noted.
