Jakarta –
Andrea Dovizioso was one of the racers who had complained about the asphalt condition at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit. Now, the asphalt on the pride of Indonesia circuit has been repaired.
In the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2022 race later, the racers will face a new layer of asphalt. MotoGP riders will also use new tires from Michelin. Dovizioso thinks this weekend will be a strange race for him, regardless of the beauty of the circuit in Lombok.
“The Mandalika circuit is a new track for everyone, at the top there will be new asphalt and new tires compared to what we had during the tests there, so it will be a strange race. Anyway, it is a very good track, so I can’t wait to race there!” said Dovizioso in a written statement with the WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team.
Dovizioso himself was stuck in the MotoGP Qatar 2022 series opener. He only finished 14th and won 2 points before heading to Indonesia. The Italian racer is targeting better results at the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2022.
“After an uneasy first lap in Qatar, we really aim to do a stronger result in Indonesia and will try to avoid the mistakes we made in the first Grand Prix,” he said.
Meanwhile, his teammate, Darryn Binder showed his passion for racing in Indonesia. He even said that he really enjoyed the pre-season test session at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, last February.
“I really enjoyed the test there, so it was really nice to come to the track, where I’ve already done a few laps with the MotoGP bike,” said Darryn Binder.
“I will try to have a good weekend in Mandalika and hope the track conditions there are better than during the tests,” he said.
Founder and Team Principal WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team Razlan Razali said the interest in MotoGP in Indonesia was insane. He felt this when MotoGP visited Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit for the first time last month.
“With regards to our riders, we had a proper test at the Mandalika Circuit a few weeks ago. I think with the re-coated asphalt we will have to re-explore everything during the first Free Practice on Friday. Anyway, big congratulations in advance to Indonesia for hosting MotoGP home again for the first time in 25 years. We’re looking forward to coming there and it’s sure to be fun!” said the man from Malaysia.
