It’s devilish in the vines – Freiburg

The “Opfinger Rebdeifel” has been on the Tuniberg since 2009. They take part in many parades.

Opfingen, situated on the edge of the Tuniberg, was first mentioned in a document in 1006. Although it is in the Breisgau, unlike Freiburg, it never came under Austria (Habsburg), but came under the sphere of influence of the Margraves of Baden. It became Protestant and for a long time had nothing to do with carnival. It was not until 1998 that a witches’ guild (Mühlbach witches) was founded there, and in 2009 a counterpart to this was a devils’ guild, the “Opfinger Rebdeifel”. The founding of the company was decided at a meeting in the Gugel café-restaurant. A bunny made of black and red patches of fabric was created, covering both the trousers and the jacket. A metal chain serves as a belt. The linden wood mask with two pointed teeth and short spiral-shaped horns, framed by a black fur hood, was carved by the sculptor Edgar Spiegelhalter. He has his workshop in March and runs a shop on Freiburg’s town hall square. In 2020, the guild celebrated the foolish 11th year of its existence – the devilish schnapps numbers are considered an anniversary by the fools.

The devils, which have now grown to more than three dozen active members, can be found at many parades (for example in Gundelfingen and Freiburg-St. Georgen). Usually the devils carry a wine barrel and a butte on a cart, into which a girl is sometimes put.
