It’s cheese export – a day for forgiveness – Agro Plovdiv – 2024-03-17 05:25:48

Today is Cheese Imports, day of Forgiveness. The usual greeting is “Forgiven – Forgiven”. Young people ask for forgiveness first than older people and vice versa.

Sirni zagovezni is always seven weeks before Easter, which this year is May 5 for Orthodox Christians and March 31 for those sheltered by the Catholic Church.

After today, the longest and most purifying Easter fast begins for Orthodox people, during which all foods of animal origin are excluded from the diet.

Cheese pie, boiled eggs, boiled wheat, halva with nuts are prepared for the table today. Hamkaning is also done: a piece of white halva or a boiled egg is tied to a red thread and lowered from the ceiling. The oldest man spins the thread in a circle and each member of the family, mainly the children, tries to catch the halva or egg with their mouth. Whoever succeeds will be alive and well throughout the year.

According to Oratnitsi custom, festive fires are lit on the day of Forgiveness. Tradition dictates that tall flames be jumped over, which brings health.

The kukers, which many places call carnivals, are another custom of Sirni zagovezni. Masking people has been a tradition since the Middle Ages. In addition to carnival attire, kukers wear bells and bells, which they strike for health. The masks are supposed to drive away the evil spirits that roam among people. Carnival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and the arrival of spring.
