Just like iPhones, Google Pixels have their own distinctive element that makes them recognizable from other smartphones at a glance. And yet, this could well disappear on the next Pixel 9a, the most affordable model in the Pixel 9 range.

A very different look for the Google Pixel 9a

It must be admitted: Google’s latest smartphones, and particularly the Google Pixel 9, look more and more like iPhones. We can even confuse them with when we look at their front side with their more rounded borders and straight edges. However, when turning a Google Pixel 9, doubt is no longer allowed, even if the photo block is no longer framed by a rectangular module crossing it from side to side, but by an oblong block which stands out even more . In any case, Google’s touch is there.

Yet, according to visuals revealed on X by the leaker OnLeaks, the Mountainview firm would take a completely opposite direction with the Google Pixel 9a. Its photo block turns out to be much more refined and discreet, so much so that you might think you’re not dealing with a Google Pixel at all. Here no bar or even a prominent block, the photo modules blend completely into the back.

They no longer stand out at all, which should have the advantage of allowing the smartphone to be laid completely flat. For the distinctive look of Google, however, it’s something else. If the block still displays the oval shape of the brand, we lose visual identity with a more classic appearance.

A change that risks disturbing more than one person. However, this more sober approach could, on the contrary, appeal to people who have until now been put off by Google’s prominent photo blocks.

What we know about the Pixel 9a, Google’s mid-range smartphone

Google obviously seems to have revised its copy for its Google Pixel 9a, undoubtedly in order to clearly distinguish it from its predecessors (Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL). The transformation will not, however, be complete since the mobile phone will retain the element that we would have liked to see change: the screen borders.

According to the visuals revealed, they remain indeed present and thus always eat up part of the screen. A choice which reminds us that we remain in the mid-range. This does not prevent you from having a quality screen. We would a priori stay on a 6.1-inch OLED screen, which should be at least as good as that of the Pixel 8awhich largely convinced me. We can imagine a gain in brightness (that of the Pixel 8a already amounting to 2000 nits).

The Google Pixel 9a should also feature a Google Tensor G4 chipwhich will give it better performance than the Google Pixel 8a, especially in terms of AI. And speaking of AI, it should benefit from the same options as the Pixel 9 like “add me” to appear in a group photo and many others.

Likewise, unlike the other Google Pixel 9s, the Pixel 9a should run directly on Android 15. It will also include 7 years of updates.

As for the photo part, we still don’t know the partition chosen by Google, except that we will again have a wide-angle sensor and an ultra-wide-angle sensor. It remains to be seen if the brand changes the sensors given that the Google Pixel 8a already has the same ones as those of the Google Pixel 7a. In any case, we don’t have much to worry about in terms of photo quality.

On the other hand, we will have to wait several more months before seeing the Google Pixel 9a officially presented. Something that will undoubtedly be done during Google I/O in spring 2025unless Google moves forward with its plans again… In the meantime, the Google Pixel 8a is still available and remains one of the best choices in terms of smartphones under €500.
