It’s a great holiday today! Name day is celebrated …

On May 11 we celebrate the memory of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius.

Even in the early Middle Ages, May 11 was designated a day in memory of the Slavic first teachers, because their apostolic work unites them in one and they are equal in dignity. May 11 is celebrated as a church holiday of the two brothers, and May 24 is celebrated as the Day of Bulgarian education and culture and the Slavic script.

In 1857 began the regular celebration of the feast of St. Cyril and Methodius in Plovdiv, Constantinople, Shumen and Lom. The first celebration was organized by Naiden Gerov in 1851 in Plovdiv. Today, May 11 is celebrated as a church holiday of the two holy brothers, while May 24 is established as a holiday of Bulgarian education and Slavic culture.

The holy brothers Constantine and Methodius – creators and distributors of the first Slavic alphabet – the Glagolitic alphabet, were canonized as saints for the translation and popularization of the Bible in the Old Slavonic language and for the spread of Christianity among the Slavs. They were declared co-patrons of Europe together with St. Benedict by Pope John Paul II.

Today Kiril, Kire, Kirin, Kiro, Kircho, Keran, Rilko, Rilcho, Kira, Kirana, Kika, Kina, Kinka, Kera, Keranka, Keratsa, Rilka, Metodi, Metko, Meto, Mecho celebrate their name day.
