JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – Head of the Geodesy Laboratory of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Heri Andreas, again reminded the potential for a tsunami up to 20 meters south of Java, the impact of which could reach parts of Jakarta.
Heri explained that until now no scientists have been able to predict when an earthquake will come.
Likewise the tsunami caused by the earthquake megathrust can’t predict when. It can happen at any time.
“It could be tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, it could be anytime,” said Heri when contacted Kompas.com by cell phone, Thursday (20/8/2021).

However, continued Heri, earthquakes are repeated.
This means that earthquakes that have occurred will occur again in the present and in the future.
The scientific term is earthquake cycle. And one of the possible sources of earthquakes is megathrust south of Java.
Megathrust This can produce an earthquake of very large strength and is currently at the end of a cycle or loop.
“In other words, it is likely to happen in the not too distant future,” he explained.
