Italy is ready to enter into a project to develop a new European tank. The program is called Main Gun Combat Systems (MGCS).
What is known
At the beginning of summer, we learned about Italy’s plans to buy Leopard 2A7/A8 tanks. In addition, Deputy Defense Minister Isabella Rauti officially confirmed last month that Rome wants to order the Leopard 2A7+. However, Italy is looking much further into the future.
MGSC is a program led by France and Germany. A promising tank can receive artificial intelligence support, unmanned aerial vehicles and will be highly mobile.
The Leonardo company can join the project. A promising European tank could be a replacement for the Leopard 2 and Ariete. It is assumed that the new combat vehicle will serve until the 2070s.
The program, which is headed by the Franco-German holding KNDS (Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter), has stalled. It is possible that the involvement of Italy in the person of Leonardo will breathe new life into the MGCS project.
For Italy, this could be the second major program after the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), which is working on one of two European sixth-generation fighters with Japan and the UK. France, Germany and Spain are working on the second aircraft.
