Italy’s Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, submitted his resignation last Thursday to President Sergio Mattarella, but this was not accepted.
In a speech to the Senate on Wednesday, he opens up to continuing.
– The popular support for the government is unparalleled and cannot be overlooked, says Draghi. Many have asked him to stay in his position and withdraw his resignation.
– This demand for stability requires that we all have to decide whether it is possible to recreate conditions that enable the government to really govern, says Draghi.
The Prime Minister signals that he is willing to try. He says the majority required for the government to work effectively must be built from above.
The latest government crisis in Italy has arisen after the Five Star Movement, one of the six parties in the government coalition, refused to participate in a vote that was also a vote of confidence in Draghi’s government.
The party believed that the aid package, which is supposed to support families and businesses suffering financially due to rising prices and the war in Ukraine, did not go far enough.
The government still has the confidence of a large majority in the National Assembly, but Draghi recently said that the disagreement within the coalition has become too great.
