Italy’s New Legislation Removes Names of Non-Biological Lesbian Mothers from Birth Certificates: Impact and Consequences

In Italy, the names of non-biological lesbian mothers are removed from their children’s birth certificates. This is the result of new legislation from the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The northern Italian city of Padua is the first city in the country to deploy the new rules, reports CNN. So far, it concerns birth certificates of 27 children.

The biological mothers underwent artificial insemination abroad. Subsequently, the child was registered in Italy. But due to Meloni’s conservative policy, local authorities are no longer allowed to record the names of both parents of the same sex on paper.

Only the biological parent of a child may still be on the birth certificate. This measure also applies to male couples. They too must choose who is listed as the legal father on the birth certificate.

In Italy, surrogacy is illegal and same-sex marriage is not legalized. Same-sex relationships are not legally recognised, so the non-biological parent must start a procedure to legally adopt the child.
