Italy is pulling out of the Belt and Road Agreement with China, four years after it became the first G7 country to join the initiative. This was announced today to AFP by a source from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, writes BTA.
The decision to withdraw from China’s megalomaniacal maritime and land infrastructure project, launched in 2013, was communicated to Beijing three days ago, according to Corriere della Sera.
Rome withdrew in such a way as to “keep the avenues open for political dialogue”, the government source told AFP.
This ambitious project by Beijing, initiated by President Xi Jinping, aims to improve trade links between Asia, Europe, Africa beyond the construction of ports, railways, airports and industrial parks.
Rome’s accession “has not produced the expected results,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in September.
