Italy will tighten the rules for tourists significantly

From Thursday, the rules for arrivals from European Union countries will be significantly tightened in Italy. People without the 19-covid vaccination will need to undergo a five-day quarantine. Vaccines will have to show a negative PCR or antigen test on arrival in Italy, the Italian media reported. The stricter travel rules will apply until 31 January.

If approved by parliament, the state of emergency in Italy will last more than two years. It first came into force last January 31 and the current state of emergency is valid until the end of the year. The government will have to issue a completely new decree, as one state of emergency can be extended for a maximum of 24 months.

The extension will allow the continuation of certain measures, such as the obligation to prove oneself with a covid certificate upon entering the workplace. Should the epidemic situation worsen and some areas be placed at the highest level of action, the state of emergency makes it possible to restrict freedom of movement.

The measures must be discussed and approved by parliament. Giorgia Meloni, head of the far-right Brothers of Italy, has already spoken out against the extension. “When (emergency) lasts two years, it is both logical and linguistic nonsense,” Meloni said. But the government has a comfortable majority in parliament.

Under current rules, people or people who recovered from a maximum of 180 days from covid-19 had only had to fill in a travel form when arriving from EU countries. In addition, the unvaccinated had to prove themselves with a negative test.

The Italian government, on the other hand, has not renewed the obligation to wear veils outdoors in public.

The incidence of coronavirus infection in the country has been rising slightly in recent weeks, but compared to some other EU countries, the situation is less serious. Today, the authorities reported about 21,000 new cases in the last 24 hours. The number of hospitalized has also increased.

120 people have died in the last day of covid-19. Since the epidemic began, 5.26 million cases of coronavirus infection have occurred in Italy, home to 59 million people, and some 135,000 people have died.
