So far, a smaller project involving 11 companies and 3 universities will involve the construction of a roughly one-kilometer stretch of road with a built-in wireless charger.

A few days ago, an international group of companies agreed to build the first Italian road with integrated charging, which will be called the Arena del Futuro – the Arena of the Future. A special section of essential oil with a length of about 1,050 meters will be built on the Italian A35 motorway (near Milan), a short distance from the Chiari Ovest exit.
The charger should form a section of about 1,035 meters in length and should be powered by one megawatt of electricity. Thanks to the technologies supplied by ElectReon, it should be possible to charge the car both when stopped and when moving. The Arena del Futuro will be a closed area that will copy the motorway but will be separated from it.

At the same time, the whole area could become a place in the future where experiments will be continued with the further application of modern technologies in automobile traffic. Terms such as “Internet of Things” or “5G technology” are often used – in both cases, these are tools that could improve the flow and safety of traffic.
The research will also include further investigation of the road surface, or its effect on the transmission of electricity between the charger and the car supporting contactless charging. The goal of all companies is to optimize technologies and facilitate their further implementation in practice.
A total of 14 entities from various sectors are participating in the project. From car companies, through technology companies to universities. In addition to the A35 Brembi-Aleatica motorway operator, these include ABB, ElectReon, FIAMM Energy Technology, IVECO, IVECO Bus, Mapei, Pizzarotti, Prysmian, Stellantis, TIM, Politecnico di Milano, Roma Tre University and the University of Parma.

It is not yet clear how long the project will last and what specific machines will be able to use wireless charging. However, according to available estimates, studies will take place in the coming months. The technology could then be used in the future by Iveco electric buses or several personal models from Stellantis production.
Depending on the success of the project, a decision on the possible construction of other similar sections is expected. While wireless charging of electric cars while driving will not be the most efficient solution, it could at least partially help break down barriers to driving worries and lengthy charging of electric cars.
