The Head of State Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé received, on April 19, 2023 in Lomé 2, the special envoy of the Italian government, Mario Giro, who came to present Rome’s candidacy for the Universal Exhibition 2030 (Expo 2030). The aim is to solicit Togo’s support for the host country election, to be held in November 2023, during the 173e General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).
Rome, capital of Italy, wishes to organize the next Universal Exhibition 2030. Also in the running for this candidacy, three other cities including Odessa (Ukraine), Busan (South Korea) and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), the candidacy of Moscow ( Russia) being withdrawn. Once the list of candidates is closed, the Member States of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) will elect the host country in November 2023 during a General Assembly. It is in this context that the Italian government is seeking the support of Togo, an important country that votes at the International Exhibitions Bureau. Mr. Mario Giro, an emissary from the Italian government was in Lomé 2 to present this request to the Head of State, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.
