FIFA through Executive Committee (Exco) member Evelina Christillin confirmed the rumors Italy can pass to 2022 World Cup replacing Iran is a utopia or an illusion.
Quoted from Football ItaliaChristillin said FIFA had never discussed replacing Iran with Italy at the 2022 World Cup.
“Let’s get this idea out of our heads, that Italy can go to the 2022 World Cup is impossible, and the idea of the Italian national team being called back is a utopia,” Christillin told Radio Uno.
Christillin further said that FIFA had met with all delegates of FIFA members, including Iran, in Qatar. Christillin ensures Iran will not be excluded from the 2022 World Cup.
Christillin thinks the rumors of Italy appearing in the 2022 World Cup replacing Iran are absurd.
“We have an executive meeting [Exco] FIFA on Wednesday in Qatar and today held a congress with all delegations, including Iran, “Christillin said.
“We never discussed getting them out [Iran] from the 2022 World Cup. Even if they are expelled, another Asian team will replace Iran,” continued Christillin.
Rumors of Iran being kicked out of the 2022 World Cup emerged after Iran barred some 2,000 female spectators from entering the stadium despite having official tickets. It happened in the Iran 2022 World Cup Qualification match against Lebanon at the Imam Reza Stadium, Mashhad, Tuesday (29/3).
Iran has confirmed qualification for the 2022 World Cup since January 27, 2022. While Italy failed to reach Qatar after being defeated by North Macedonia in the semifinals of the playoffs.
