Italy: Minister of Justice attack on immigration judges –

The Italian Minister of Justice Calo Nordio, speaking at a conference held in Palermo, Sicily, referred to yesterday’s decision of the court in Rome, which concerns the return of twelve migrants from the closed detention centers in Albania.

More specifically, the Italian minister and a close associate of the country’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, emphasized: “When judges exceed the limits of their jurisdiction and consider that they have powers that they cannot have, such as declaring a country safe, it must intervene politics, which expresses the popular will. We give the people a say, if the people don’t agree with what we do, we go home. The judges – who are independent and autonomous – do not give a reason to anyone and for this reason they cannot have powers, which are essentially and clearly political”.

The Italian minister added that “in relation to this whole case, legislative initiatives are going to be taken” and that “the specific decisions risk causing diplomatic incidents, because anyone characterizing a friendly country like Morocco as unsafe can to cause problems”.
