Italy: Meloni tries to prove she’s not a fascist… and sues writer over his statement – 2024-03-29 21:04:45

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni filed a lawsuit against the well-known philologist, author and historian Luciano Canfora, who, two years ago, speaking to high school students, said that the politician and president of the “Brothers of Italy” “in her soul is a neo-Nazi and for this reason he immediately sided with the Ukrainian neo-Nazis.” The first hearing in the case was set for April 16, and Canfora is charged with defamation.

As the Italian press writes, more than thirty well-known associations and organizations of the country, together with two hundred and fifty intellectuals, signed a statement of support for Canfora, in which it is emphasized that “this is a legitimate exercise of the right to criticize in the field of politics” and that “further Meloni’s goal is to harm the right to free thought guaranteed by the Constitution.”

The Italian Prime Minister, for her part, has emphasized that “these are unacceptable words, especially because they are spoken by a man who should be dealing with education and training while, after all, he is making low-level propaganda, addressing young people.”

Commentators in Italy point out that, according to tradition, the respective prime minister, until now, withdrew any defamation lawsuits as soon as he assumed the leadership of the country.

It is noted that Meloni is not the first time to file a lawsuit for this reason. One of her most well-known corresponding actions is the lawsuit against the singer of Placebo who called her a fascist during a concert.
