Italy has lifted the ban on access to interactive artificial intelligence (AI) ‘ChatGPT’. It has been a month since the use of ChatGPT was banned for the first time among Western countries at the end of last month.
On the 28th (local time), a spokesperson for OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, said, “Italian users can now use ChatGPT again. We will continue to do our best to protect personal data.” Italy temporarily blocked access to ChatGPT on the 31st of last month. The reason was that ChatGPT collects personal information without legal grounds and that young children can access it too easily. Italy is the first Western country to discontinue ChatGPT service.
At the time, the Italian Data Protection Agency criticized OpenAI for not being clear about whose data it was collecting, and for not properly managing the inaccurate answers provided by ChatGPT. In response, the Agency requested OpenAI to upload information such as how ChatGPT handles data on its website, and to add tools that allow ChatGPT to correct or delete inaccurately generated personal information.
The introduction of a user age verification system was also presented as a condition for service resumption. It blocks users under the age of 13 from using ChatGPT, and requests parental approval for users under the age of 18.
OpenAI said it was able to resume its service on the same day after reflecting most of the conditions requested by the Italian authorities, and said it hopes “constructive discussions with the privacy regulator will continue.” In response, the Protection Agency also said, “We recognize the measures taken by OpenAI to harmonize individual rights and technological progress.”
