Italy is going to tighten corona rules, ‘green pass’ needed to…

Anyone going to a restaurant in Italy will need a ‘green pass’. Proof that you have been vaccinated, tested negative for corona or have recovered from the disease. Italy follows the example of France.

The corona situation in Italy is still under control for the time being. The seven-day average is about 3,000 new cases per day. The positivity ratio of the tests taken rose from 1 to 2 percent. There were 15 deaths from the coronavirus in 24 hours. More than 53 percent of the adult population is fully vaccinated. So the situation is not that bad, but the country was badly hit in the first two waves last year. That is still in the collective memory, to avoid a repetition, the government intervenes today.

After a lot of political tug-of-war between the regions and the federal government, the ‘green pass’ has arrived. Anyone who wants to participate in an indoor activity such as going to a restaurant, visiting a museum or playing sports will have to prove from 6 August that he has been vaccinated, has tested negative or has recovered. Unlike, for example, in France one shot will suffice. And also a quick test is accepted for the certificate.

Quarantine shortened

The rules only apply to indoor activities. Think of the gym, the cinemas, the swimming pools and spas, but also sports competitions. Going on a terrace without a ‘green pass’ is therefore possible undisturbed. Strangely enough, the rules in restaurants only apply to people at a table, so hanging at the counter is allowed without a pass. Children under the age of twelve are exempt.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said he wants to keep the country open in this way. ‘The delta variant is a threat because it spreads so quickly.’ Health Minister Roberto Speranza, meanwhile, urged the population to get vaccinated.

When a vaccinated person has a high-risk contact, the quarantine of fourteen days would be shortened. The government has not yet decided by how many days. In order to reduce the cost of continuous testing, the rapid tests at the pharmacist are becoming cheaper.

It is not yet clear whether the European corona pass will be sufficient for tourists.

The Italian consultation committee also decided that discotheques will remain closed throughout the country, and that the state of emergency will be extended until the end of the year.
