Italy on Monday introduced mandatory Covid-19 tests for all entrants from Paris and other parts of France with high rates of infection.
Explaining the decision on Facebook, Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranca wrote that the situation in Europe should not be underestimated and called for more caution.
“Italy is doing better today than other countries, but still needs to be very careful not to jeopardize the efforts made so far,” the minister said.
Italy was the first Western country to be affected by the new coronavirus pandemic, but the situation was brought under control following the declaration of a state of emergency in March and strict restrictions.
However, since mid-July, the number of patients has started to rise faster again, and with the opening of schools this month, fears of a second wave of infection have increased.
According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the 14-day cumulative number of infections per 100,000 population in Italy is 34.
By comparison, the figure is 300.5 in Spain, 192.5 in France and 25.9 in Germany.
