Italy has a record poverty rate since 2005

More than 5.6 million Italian citizens lived in absolute poverty in 2020, the local statistical office calculated.

In Italy, the number of people living in absolute poverty in 2020 was the highest since 2005, that is, since the beginning of the calculation. This was announced by the National Institute of Statistics on Wednesday, June 16.

The absolute poverty is considered to be the monthly income from 569.56 euros to 839.78 euros per person, depending on the region of the country.

In 2020, in conditions of absolute poverty in Italy there were more than 5.6 million people (9.4% of their total number) and just over 2 million families (7.7%): this exceeds the figures for 2019 by 1.7% and 1.3%, respectively. Just over 2.6 million Italian families lived in relative poverty (less than € 1,001.86 for a two-person family), down 1.3% from 2019 data.

The highest level of absolute poverty among families is observed in the southern regions of the country: there are 9.4% of the total (in the northern regions – 7.6%, in the central regions – 5.4%). In 2020, 767 thousand families with minor children also found themselves in a state of absolute poverty (2.2% more than in 2019).

Recall that by 2030 the EU intends to reduce the number of poor by 15 million… By the end of the current decade, in the countries of the European Union, it is necessary to achieve an employment level of at least 78%.
