An own goal and a late decision brought down Italy.

South Africa snubbed the Italians for a place in the round of 16 and the last goal came in the second extra minute.

South Africa’s star Thembi Kgatlana sent his country through to the round of 16.

In the second extra minute, the big chance appeared in the penalty area and she made it 3-2 against Italy.

Thus, South Africa overtook their opponents in the table and took second place behind Sweden in WC group G.

Own goal by Orsi

The Italian players were devastated after the final whistle and the loss was particularly tough for 23-year-old Benedetta Orsi, who made her World Cup debut on Wednesday.

When Italy led 1-0 in the first half, she would pass the ball home to goalkeeper Francesca Durante, who was not on the scoresheet at all.

Durante threw himself in vain at the ball which went into the goal, meaning that South Africa had equalised.

The match then became a swinging story, which meant that South Africa reached its first round of 16 in the World Cup.

In the round of 16, the team faces the Netherlands.
