Palermo –
Italy just failed to pass to 2022 World Cup. Is it with this result captain Giorgio Chiellini will retire from La Nazionale?
Chiellini just extended his contract with Juventus last season until June 2023. The Bianconeri gave him an additional two seasons contract, which is believed to have also been influenced by the 37-year-old defender’s desire to feature in the 2022 World Cup.
The tournament in Qatar will be held in November-December, after the 2021/22 season in Europe is over and the 2022/23 season is rolling. If he wants to stay competitive, then Chiellini will have to stay two more years in Turin.
But what can I say, Chiellini’s dream was lost on Friday (25/3/2022) early this morning. Italy lost 0-1 to North Macedonia in the playoffs.
Though Chiellini was excited to appear. Replacing the injured Gianluca Mancini late in the second half, he seemed eager to encourage his juniors on the pitch to appear bolder in front of goal.
He can also be relied on in corner situations, which Italy has been able to do many times but can’t make the most of it. But what power, he did not have enough time to do it. Italy conceded conceded in injury time and eventually lost.
With Italy absent from the World Cup, will this be the end of Chiellini’s career in the national team? The owner of 114 caps for Gli Azzurri is not sure yet.
“I think we need to play the next game, then we will see how it develops. Now is not the time to talk about this,” Chiellini told RAI Sport.
Italy has two friendlies remaining, against Turkey on March 29 and against Argentina on July 1. Maybe Chiellini will still appear there.
