Italy Considers Deporting Bears After Fatal Attack in Trentino-South Tyrol

Italy wants to deport bears living in the northern region of Trentino-South Tyrol. In early April, a 26-year-old jogger was killed after being attacked by a bear in a popular hiking area near the village of Caldes. Since then, the debate about the bears has been heated.

The bear that killed the jogger is currently being held at a wildlife sanctuary. A committee has also been set up to consider measures to control the expansion of the bear population in the area.

But that is not enough, says Italian Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. He will talk to other countries about the deportation of the bears.

It is estimated that about a hundred bears live in the north of Italy. In 1999, bears from Slovenia were released as part of an EU program to reintroduce the animals to the Italian Alps.

The bear that killed the jogger had previously injured a father and son in the same area. The president of the province of Trent initially wanted to have the 150 kilo animal killed, but after a complaint from animal activists, a judge stopped that.

The bear’s fate will be decided at a hearing on May 11.
