Italy cable car drama: photo shows disabled emergency brake

A few days after the accident, which killed 14 people, three people from the company were already arrested. The technical trace investigation had also shown that the emergency brake had been deliberately tampered with, probably to prevent delays. Police say the drama probably wouldn’t have happened if the emergency brake had worked.

The photo that La Stampa now shows, clearly shows the red hooks, which prevent the emergency brake from doing its job. The hooks in question are said to have been set up because the braking system caused disruptions in the transport service on the mountain.

Been using it for two weeks

It now becomes clear that the cabin in question had been in use for at least two weeks with a disabled emergency brake.

The accident happened when the tow rope, which was supposed to pull the gondola forward, broke. As the emergency brake failed, the cabin flew backwards at full speed and collided with a pillar and fell down.
