Italy will ban synthetic food, becoming the first country in the world to take such a step, Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida announced at the weekend.

The minister made such a statement at an event organized by the European Conservative and Reformist Group (ECR) in Ireland, which was also attended by the Commissioner for Agriculture of the European Union (EU) Janus Wojciechovskis.

The event “Tradition and Innovation: A Conservative Future for European Farmers” brought together leading conservative politicians to discuss the challenges and opportunities of European regulation and cooperation in livestock, agriculture and the green economy. Lolobrigida and Wojciechowski participated in the event remotely.

“Italy will be the first country to get rid of synthetic food and wants to set an example of how it can be regulated,” said Lollobrigida, who represents the national conservative Fratelli d’Italia party.

“We have chosen the precautionary principle. (..) Food quality is essential, and we cannot accept that society is divided into two parts and that quality food is produced only for the rich elite.

We are convinced that everyone should have the opportunity to eat well,” the minister added.

Wojciechowski, who represents the Polish national conservative party “Law and Justice”, largely supported Lolobrigida’s position. “As a commissioner, I support traditional agriculture, I defend natural products very strongly. The labeling system does not depend on me, but I try to protect the traditions,” Wojciechowski explained.

“Synthetic meat is not meat, synthetic milk is not milk. I’m a natural product advocate, and using a natural product name for a synthetic product is not a step in the right direction in my opinion,”

he added, noting that the European Commission (EC) allocates more than six billion euros to support animal welfare and traditional agriculture.

However, the agricultural model proposed by the conservatives is in stark contrast to the model adopted by the EU, which, according to the “Brothers of Italy” party, is too bureaucratic and unable to deal with the new problems affecting the continent.

“Farmers, ranchers and fishermen risk paying a very high price for the ideological nonsense behind the European Union’s ‘Green Deal’, which punishes producers with emission reduction targets that will only lead to a reduction in food production,” explained MEP Carlo Fidanza, who heads the “Brothers of Italy” group in the European Parliament.

“Less food production will only be replaced in the medium term by more imports from countries that do not meet our sustainability and quality standards, or from laboratory products that we have no confidence in,” he added.

In order to change the system, the ECR must achieve good results in the EU elections in June 2024 and find allies to form an alternative majority for the left in the European Parliament.
