Italy, supported by their home crowd in Turin, successfully entered the Davis Cup by beating the United States with resounding victories from Lorenzo Sonego and then Jannik Sinner in both singles.
Sonego (27th worldwide) led the way by playing “the best tennis of (his) life” to beat Reilly Opelka (26th) 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).
He was imitated in the wake of Sinner (10th) who humiliated John Isner (24th) 6-2, 6-0 in 1h02. A match concluded on an ace of Sinner – his only one of the match – which left his opponent without reaction.
For the classification of the group, the Italian double Simone Bolleli / Fabio Fognini still has to face his American counterpart Rajeev Ram / Jack Sock.
Colombia completes Group E.
The final phase of the new look Davis Cup, of which the second edition is starting (after 2019, it was canceled in 2020 due to Covid-19), consists of a group stage with six groups of three teams, spread this year in three different cities, Madrid, Innsbruck (Austria) and Turin (Italy), followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
