Italy bans large cruise ships in Venice

The decision comes just days after a UNESCO meeting where it was proposed to classify Venice as a “world heritage site in danger”.

– The current regulation is an important step towards the protection of the lagoon system in Venice, said Prime Minister Mario Draghi in a statement.

Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said the government quickly agreed on the ban on Tuesday, and that it will take effect on August 1. This applies to entering the lagoon pool near St. Mark’s Square and the Giudecca canal.

Italian authorities have also given the urban waterways the title “national monument”, to protect the area from pollution in the years to come.
