Italy is in talks with the European Commission about phasing out combustion engines in cars. The Commission wants new cars to have 55 percent less emissions by 2030 and 100 percent by 2035. Italy wants an exception for supercars as Ferrari and Lamborghini, writes Bloomberg.com.
Italy fully supports the plan to tackle emissions by banning the most polluting engines, Ecological Transition Minister Cingolani told Bloomberg TV. But he also said there is a niche “in the giant car market”. Discussions are now underway with the European Commission “how the new rules will apply to high end-car manufacturers that sell far fewer cars than the mainstream manufacturers”.
Cingolani also said the Italian government is in talks with other European countries. “I’m confident there won’t be a problem.”
Banning internal combustion engines is part of the in July presented EU plans to combat global warming.
