Italy and Vatican Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Concordat Signing, Cardinal Parolin Addresses Farmers’ Strikes

It has been 40 years since the concordat between Italy and the Holy See was signed. At that time, in 1984, it was signed by Prime Minister Bettino Craxi from the Italian side, and by Cardinal Agostino Cazaroli from the Vatican side.

Taking part in the commemoration of the signing of the concordat at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See, the current Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, noted that “it does not refer only to the past, but is also projected to the future”. After the meeting at the Borromeo Palace, Cardinal Parolin answered some journalists’ questions, including about the current farmers’ strikes in Italy and throughout Europe. Farmers “must be listened to, there must be dialogue, openness to dialogue about the sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises and the future of agrarian areas”, said the cardinal. He added that “the person must always be at the center of everything, therefore, his dignity must be protected and he must be given the opportunity to express his best proposals”.
