Italy advocates banning exports of French COVID-19 vaccine outside the EU

France said it supports Italy, which banned the export of vaccines for novel infectious diseases (Corona 19) outside the European Union.

Following Italy, which was the first EU member country to put a brake on the export of the Corona 19 vaccine, interests are focused on whether or not France will take similar measures.

Health Minister Olivier Berand said in an interview with BFM on the 5th (local time) that he “understands” the Italian government’s decision and that the French government “may take the same action.”

Earlier, the Italian government denied a request to allow a multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to export 250,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine produced at its Italian factory to Australia.

Italy reported this decision to the EU Commission on the 26th of last month, and the EU Commission did not object to it, Rarepubblica and others reported the day before.

At the end of January of this year, the EU introduced a’vaccine export control regulation’ stating that if the corona19 vaccine manufacturer fails to meet the vaccine supply contracted with the EU, exports outside the country are prohibited.

Earlier, AstraZeneca was notified that the amount of vaccines to be supplied to EU member states in the first and second quarters of this year will be reduced from the original contract due to production disruption.
