Assigned to Ciaccio hospital, in the southern city of Catanzaro, in 2005, the man never actually took up his post. Nicknamed “the king of absenteeism” by the Italian press, he however received the trifle of 538,000 euros until 2021, when he retired.
Threats against the hospital director
If her absence was never noticed, neither by management, nor by human resources, she was eventually noticed by the police, during a vast investigation. Betrayed by the hospital’s attendance records, the testimony of other employees and his pay slips, the 67-year-old neo-retiree is now accused of “abuse of power”, “aggravated extortion” and “False”. He is also accused of having threatened the director of the establishment in order to prevent him from filing a disciplinary report against him.

Six hospital executives are also the subject of an investigation, suspected of having organized his paid absenteeism. This case is part of a tightening of labor-related legislation, adopted by the Italian government in 2016.
