The Italian national wrestling team confessed that he received suggestions for match-fixing ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers.
In an interview with the local daily newspaper ‘La Repubblica’ on the 10th (local time), Cuban-born Italian national wrestling representative Frank Chamizo (32) said, “Someone came to me on the morning of the weigh-in and told me that if I lost in the semifinals, I would receive $300,000 (about 410 million dollars). “He offered to give me 10,000 won,” he claimed, adding, “I declined it because I represent not only myself but also Italy.”
The match that Chamijo mentioned is the semifinals of the men’s freestyle 74kg class at the 2024 Paris Olympics wrestling European qualifiers. At that time, he faced Azerbaijan’s Turan Bairamov and lost, a match that caused controversy due to the referee’s unclear decision. Camijo succeeded in a comeback with 1 second left, but the score was canceled due to video review by the opposing coach. In the slow footage, Bayramov’s right knee was clearly captured hitting the floor, but the referee declared the score invalid.
In the end, Camijo lost the right to participate in his first Olympics. He disobeyed the decision and was unable to leave the stadium for a while, and boos poured in from the stands. Afterwards, Camijo posted a video of the game on Instagram and said, “I apologize to those who are watching this game. “My sport is beautiful,” he said. “This is just a group of bribed and corrupt people. “It’s really sad,” he wrote.
Camizo will compete in the Olympic qualifiers to be held in Turkye Istanbul in May, aiming to qualify once again. He said he was not worried about the repercussions of this revelation and said, “I am not afraid of anything. In a free country, I can freely say what I think and want. “No one can stop me,” he said.
Chamijo, who started wrestling at the age of 7, won a bronze medal at the World Championships as a representative of Cuba in 2010 when he was 18. However, the following year, the Cuban Wrestling Federation took issue with his weight management and suspended him for two years, and Chamijo moved to Italy. Since becoming a member of the Italian national team in 2015, he has won a gold medal at the World Championships and a bronze medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He also emerged as a wrestling star by winning the European Championships four times.
