Italian woman (39) turns out to be co-suspect in Vatican scandal | Abroad

The woman, Cecilia Marogna, has been arrested in Milan by the financial police over an international arrest warrant issued by the Vatican authorities. A high-ranking source within the Vatican says Marogna is suspected of embezzlement and forgery or involvement in it.

In recent days, interviews with Marogna have appeared in Italian media, in which she claims that she received half a million euros from Becciu for “parallel diplomacy” to help mission posts in conflict areas. Marogna denied in the interviews that she did anything wrong.

Luxury real estate

Becciu was recently discredited over a scandal involving investing Church money in valuable real estate in London. An investigation into the purchase of a building made a number of heads roll within the Vatican. The heads of the police and the Vatican’s financial authority, among others, resigned.

Becciu denies being guilty of malpractice.
