Sales of Italian wine in the United States have more than doubled in value in the last twenty years with an increase of 148%, and in 2024 they could reach 1.9 billion euros, the highest ever.
This is stated in an analysis by Coldiretti on Istat data, released on the occasion of the inauguration of Vinitaly USA in Chicago, with the presence of the national president Ettore Prandini and the CEO of Filiera Italia Luigi Scordamaglia. The USA is the world’s leading consumer of wine with 33.3 million hectoliters, according to Coldiretti analysis of OIV data, and for Italy it represents the most important market in value.
But Italy is also the main supplier by volume to the United States, with around 450 million bottles sold. About a quarter is represented by prosecco, which is the most popular among American consumers, even if there are now more and more “labels” from different regions that have acquired notoriety among stars and stripes gourmets.
“Presence at Vinitaly Chicago is part of the initiatives that Coldiretti is carrying out for the promotion of Italian wine starting from the communication of its values - explained Prandini -. Wine, vineyards and winemakers bring with them art, history, culture, traditions, conviviality, territories, landscapes, biodiversity, environmental protection, wine tourism. A heritage to be defended on all markets, for which we hope for active support from Europe too.” “The goal is to establish a permanent communication channel to inform and educate American consumers on why Italian wine is so different from other products in the world – added Scordamaglia – thanks to its great diversity in variety, environmental variability and millennia of culture and tradition, as well as absolute sustainability of production techniques”.
