Four Italian tourists fled a restaurant in Albania without paying. This story spread in the media and social networks of both countries, after which Italian Prime Minister George Meloni ordered to pay for them, wrote The print August 18.
The incident took place in Berat, a historic city in the center of the country. Albanian Report TV spoke to the owner of the restaurant, who did not even try to harass them. He stated that he had not had such cases before and that the Italians had praised the food before the escape.
After the incident, the Italian embassy in Albania took over the payment of the bill. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama told La Stampa about the episode.
“The Albanian media and TikTok didn’t talk about anything else but a group of Italians who ran away from a restaurant in Berat without paying. When I told about this George, everyone laughed. She told the ambassador: “Go and pay for these idiots, please make a statement! Italy can’t lose respect like that.”
Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, who was also on a trip to Albania, told the news agency Reutersthat paying the bill was a matter of pride.
“A few dishonest people cannot embarrass a nation of decent people,” he said.
At the Italian Embassy clarifiedthat the payment was repaid from Meloni’s own funds.
“Italians respect the rules and pay their debts, and we hope that such episodes will not happen again,” the mission said in a statement.
