The Italian is accused of robbing a bank in Innsbruck and a jewelry store in Salzburg, as confirmed by the APA public prosecutor. There was a European arrest warrant against the 54-year-old, and he was also wanted in Italy for robbery and attempted murder.
The 54-year-old was arrested by police officers while working in a garage, Italian media reports say. The man was taken to a Milan prison. An appeals court is now to decide on extradition to Austria.
In May 2000, a branch of the Bank für Tirol und Vorarlberg (BTV) in Innsbruck was attacked by three “southern type” men. They threatened bank employees with pistols and tied up employees and customers. Nobody was hurt. The perpetrators were able to flee and, according to information at the time, stole more than one million schillings (around 72,600 euros). The now 54-year-old could now be found out by means of a DNA comparison.
The other two perpetrators are still on the run, according to Hansjörg Mayr, spokesman for the Innsbruck public prosecutor’s office. The attack on a jeweler in Salzburg took place in December 2000. Another perpetrator is also still on the run, Mayr continues.
