Breast and colorectal cancer represent the two most common tumors in Italy. The diagnosis becomes a nightmare for patients and families. However, early identification through systematic screening and currently available treatments can change prognosis and quality of life. An important Italian scientific study, published in the “International Journal of Cancer” (born from the collaboration between the Oncology Reference Center Aviano IRCCS, Azienda Zero in the Veneto Region, the Association of Italian Cancer Registries, and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità ) has shown how to recover from breast cancer 99% if the diagnosis is made at the initial stage of the disease. After 10 years from the identification of the tumor the risk of recurrence is equal to 5%. Similar results were obtained for patients with colorectal cancer.
About one million women are alive after having breast cancer in Italy. Great attention must be paid to the population recovered after a cancer diagnosis: it will be necessary to implement legislative interventions aimed at oncological negligence (law 193 of 2023) and to reduce the stigma around on elderly cancer patients.
Regional maintenance of organized screening programs is essential in geographical areas such as Sardinia, where the levels according to the PASSI program are lower than the national average.
