A session in the Italian Parliament, on Wednesday, witnessed a “historic” precedent, represented by Representative Gilda Sportiello bringing her two-month-old baby, and breastfeeding him in Parliament.
The deputies applauded Sportello, who attended the session accompanied by her son, Frederico, according to the British Daily Mail.
Besides bringing Frederico with her to Parliament, Sportiello also breast-fed him, which represents a first in Italy, where men hold two-thirds of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
“Many women stop breastfeeding early, not by choice, but because they are forced to go back to work,” said Sportiello, who belongs to the Five Star movement.
For his part, Giorgio Moli, who was presiding over the parliamentary session, said: ‘It is the first time we have seen such a matter. Best wishes to Federico for a long and happy life.”
It is worth noting that the Parliamentary Rules Committee in Italy last November gave the green light to female representatives to enter the parliament hall with their children, and to breastfeed them until they reach one year of age.
