The world of rallying is shaken by a tragedy.
The Italian driver Giulia Maroni has died.
That after she fell over 50 meters during a walk with her dog.
It was during Sunday that Giulia Maroni went for a walk on the mountain Monte Libro Aperto, part of the hiking area Pizzo dei Sassi Bianchi, writes The Sun. She hiked with her partner and her dog.
Maroni is said to have lost his balance, slipped into a ravine and then fallen more than 50 meters among trees and rocks. As a result of the fall, she sustained injuries that later turned out to be life-threatening. Maroni was flown to hospital where she later died that evening.
Competed in Dakar
The rally driver won the 2021 Italian off-road rally championship. Then as map reader for Sergio Galletti. Giulia Maroni has also competed in the Dakar Rally as co-driver to Rebecca Busi. However, the duo did not complete the race, but had to cancel due to engine failure.
The Italian has also competed in what is now known as the FIA European Baja Cup, where she finished second together with Lina Van De Mars in the 2021 edition. On Instagram, Van De Mars writes:
“We were planning for the 2024 season. It has been an honor to know you. It has been a pleasure competing with you. I am still proud that we became European vice-champions in the world. Rest in peace my friend, I am still shocked.”
Giulia Maroni was 37 years old.
